Now is the time,
This is the hour,
Ours is the magic,
Ours is the power (The Craft,1996) The history of witchcraft in the western world begins with ancient myths and stories. In the early modern period, the climate changes of the Little Ice Age, wars and religious dogma led to a long and brutal period of witchcraft persecution in Europe. As with so many other historical developments, the history of witches was also determined by fear. – Fear of the other, to be precise. And
we still encounter this fear today. In her exhibition “Warrior of Mother Earth”, Maike Denker combines depictions of nature with feminist perspectives and contemporary questions about environmental protection and the climate crisis. Inspired by the symbolism of the witch as a nature-loving rebel, her current works examine how cultural and social narratives shape our relationship with the environment. Her nature collages, objects and works on paper illuminate the connection between humans, magic and nature in a contemporary context.
