This summer, the Emsland Archaeology Museum is showing the Emsländische Landschaft’s special exhibition on

Dr. Elisabeth Schlicht – on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the Emsland Plan. But what does the Emsland Plan have to do with archaeology? The rapid infrastructural and agricultural development of the 1950s presented the first female district archaeologist in Emsland with major challenges. Numerous archaeological monuments were threatened by building projects and urgently needed to be documented or saved. With great commitment, limited resources and in a male-dominated (specialist) world, Dr. Elisabeth Schlicht succeeded in protecting and securing important traces of the past. Many of the finds recovered at the time are now part of the museum’s permanent exhibition. On the occasion of the special exhibition, selected finds and archive materials are presented exclusively.

The exhibition invites visitors to get to know an archaeologist’s view of home, development and monument protection in a time of upheaval. An accompanying educational program also provides interesting insights into archaeological excavation and restoration.
