At the beginning of 2023, the Emsland Archaeology Museum received as a gift from the heirs of an enthusiastic amateur archaeologist his collection of archaeologically relevant finds. For decades, the hobbyist meticulously searched the fields around Haren for relics from the Stone Age. The “little stones” collected over many years turned out to be a real treasure: They are numerous small tools from the Middle Stone Age, which prove that people already lived in the Emsland region more than 8,000 years ago. Under the title “Under the magnifying glass”, a large part of the collection will in future complement the permanent exhibition on the prehistory and early history of the Emsland region and will be presented to the general public for the first time from 18 November.
