The German painter, graphic artist and sculptor Otto Pankok (1893-1966) was an important representative of 20th century expressive realism. His sympathy for minorities and the persecuted, which he championed in his main work, the “Passion” cycle created in 1933/34, and his clear criticism of National Socialist tyranny, brought him into conflict with those in power under the Nazis. He was banned from painting and his art was considered “degenerate”. Between 1938 and 1941, he withdrew to the seclusion of Bokeloh in Emsland to live and work with his family undisturbed by the National Socialists. We start by bike at the town museum and ride together towards Bokeloh. There we will explore the Otto Pankok Painters’ Trail under expert guidance and then gain further exciting insights into the artist’s life and work in the Old School. To round off the tour, we will stop for coffee and cake at Gasthaus Giese. At around 3.30 p.m. we cycle back together towards the town museum. Location: Meppen City Museum
