The construction and operation of the Transrapid test track near Lathen took place during the era of Gerhard Hugenberg, Managing Director of the GmbH. The test track was put into operation in 1983 – accompanied by intensive public relations work, lectures, presentations, press articles, brochures, image films and finally the “Transrapid Visitor Center”, which introduced thousands of people to the technology, possibilities and opportunities of the maglev train in an experience-oriented way. After test operations were discontinued in 2011, the center was initially closed. However, the facility has been open to visitors again for several years thanks to the dedicated work of a support association founded for this purpose. We go on a day trip by bike from Meppen to Lathen and back. Strong pedal cyclists can cycle both routes, while others can use the Westfalenbahn bicycle transport service for the return journey.
