*The Artificial Silk Girl* is set in the early 1930s and tells the story of eighteen-year-old Doris. The secretary is fed up with poverty and small-town life; she wants her life to be like a movie: “With a white car and bathwater that smells like perfume.” With nothing but a stolen fur coat in her luggage and driven by her irrepressible longing for a self-determined life, she flees to the breathless, glittering world of Berlin. Full of poetry and wit, she recounts her experiences in her diary—set in luxurious venues, dimly lit bars, and smoke-filled literary cafés. Everything seems possible in this city, yet as Doris tries to carve out a place for herself, the political situation grows increasingly bleak. Between self-assertion and vulnerability, a haunting portrait emerges of a young woman struggling for freedom—while the rising tide of National Socialism is already casting its shadow.

The play is based on the novel of the same name by Irmgard Keun. In this production, the play is presented as a solo performance starring Eva Schröer. A native of Meppen, she now lives with her family in Münster and works as a freelance actress on her own projects as well as at various theaters—including the Stadttheater Brandenburg, the Schlosstheater Sanssouci, and the Boulevard Münster. She is a member of the Stadtensemble Münster and, in addition to her stage work, is passionately involved in theater programs for young people.
