From “Friend and Helper” to “Street Fighter” and Instrument of Terror: The Police Apparatus under National Socialism
Historian Jaqueline Meurisch examines the role of the police in the Nazi regime. The lecture traces the transformation of the police from an institution of the early Weimar Republic into an instrument of persecution and terror under National Socialism. She places particular emphasis on the history of the Emsland camps. The Esterwegen Memorial is currently hosting the exhibition “Order and Extermination,” which examines persecution, deportations, police crimes during the war, and the involvement of police officials in the Holocaust. The exhibition is supplemented by regional examples.
