As part of the “Open Monument Day” event, the neoclassical Arenberg Rentei building in Meppen will be open from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. Visitors will gain insights into the building and its history, as well as into the reign of the Dukes of Arenberg, who ruled the Emsland region beginning in 1803. In addition, the “Meppen City History Experience and Information Rooms” invite visitors to explore the town’s history. Free special guided tours will take place at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.
The theme “NetzWERKE: Monuments & Infrastructure,” issued by the German Foundation for Monument Protection, focuses this year on movement, exchange, and connections that are created or facilitated by monuments. Monuments can be networks that connect us as people in every situation in life and thus make society possible. Historic infrastructure structures, in particular, have been facilitating interaction between people for centuries: historic structures that not only fulfill their ideal purpose—giving us a sense of identity and exceptional aesthetics—but should also be maintained and preserved, in part for practical reasons.
Location: Arenbergische Rentei, Obergerichtsstr. 14, 49716 Meppen
