They are between 290,000 and 337,000 years old and were once used for hunting by one of our ancestors, homo heidelbergensis: The Sch\u00f6ningen spears. This makes them the oldest surviving hunting weapons in the world.   The throwing and thrusting weapons got their name from the place where they were found: A total of nine of these Palaeolithic weapons were recovered during excavations between 1994 and 1998 at the edge of the open-cast lignite mine in Sch\u00f6ningen, Lower Saxony.
