SUMMARY:Digital Offerings from the Meppen City Museum - Experience History at the Arenbergische Rentei
DESCRIPTION:In 2023\, using funds from the municipal support program “Perspektive Innenstadt\,” a complex of “experiential and informational spaces dedicated to Meppen’s city history” was created in the former Arenbergische Rentei building\, along with attractive information stations offering innovative educational programs on local history. These include a digital city model\, an engaging introductory film on Meppen’s local history on the ground floor\, as well as an accessible archive of images and documents\, a searchable museum object database\, a learning space with a library\, and a museum display storage area. In three historically staged rooms\, atmospheric audio dramas invite visitors to experience Meppen’s history “up close.” All of these offerings can also be experienced digitally via a web application and accessed using mobile devices or smartphones—simply scan the QR code. SUMMARY:Writing Contest Hosted by the Emsland Archaeology Museum
DESCRIPTION:The Story of Red Franz \n\nJune 1900\, Neu Versen: Peat cutter Bernard Herbers struck an obstacle with his spade. He quickly realized that he had found the body of a young man. \n\n90 years later\, laboratory analyses confirmed that the bog body was that of a 25-year-old man from the 4th century A.D. Today we know that he was a Germanic warrior. He often traveled on horseback. He wore his blond hair artfully styled\, and with his towering stature\, he certainly made an impression. His death was no accident: a cut across his throat ended his life\, and his body was subsequently deposited in the bog.     \nThat is how the story of the oldest known murder case in the Emsland region began. The death of the so-called “Red Franz” remains a mystery to this day. Many questions remain unanswered: Why did he have to die? Who murdered him? And how did he end up in the moor in the first place?     \nEnter our writing contest and solve the mysteries surrounding the murder of Red Franz in a fictional crime story. Let your imagination run wild. The contest is open to all individuals between the ages of 12 and 18. Stories can be submitted via email to info@archaeologie-emsland.de with the subject line “The Murder of Red Franz.” Please note the maximum character limit of 8\,000 characters\, including spaces.     \n  \nThe deadline for submissions is November 30\, 2026. SUMMARY:The Schindlers' Legacy - Lecture by Erika Rosenberg-Band
DESCRIPTION:Who was Oskar Schindler (1908–1974)\, known for the famous Spielberg film *Schindler’s List*\, really? Letters and documents that were unexpectedly discovered in an attic in Hildesheim in 1999 offer new insights into both the dramatic events of that time and Schindler’s life in the postwar period. These documents not only shed new light on Schindler the hero\, but above all bring us closer to Schindler the man. Emilie Schindler (1907–2001)\, like her husband\, dedicated her life to saving Jews—a courageous woman who maintained her integrity during a barbaric era and whom many mistakenly believe stood in her husband’s shadow.    \nErika Rosenberg-Band was born on June 24\, 1951\, in Buenos Aires\, Argentina. Her parents\, German Jews\, had fled there to escape the Nazi regime. She studied literature\, languages\, history\, and education in Argentina\, Germany\, and England. In 1990\, she met Emilie Schindler\, Oskar Schindler’s wife\, during an interview for Deutsche Welle. Erika Rosenberg-Band subsequently wrote several books about her and Oskar Schindler. She worked as a lecturer at the Goethe-Institut in Buenos Aires until 2010\, at the Catholic University of Buenos Aires in Argentina until 2011\, and currently trains future diplomats for the German Foreign Office in Argentina. She also works as a writer\, translator\, and journalist. During her lecture\, Erika Rosenberg-Band will talk about her life and work and will then be available to answer questions.        \nThe event is being held in cooperation with the Stolpersteine Meppen Initiative Group.

Thompson. The music of this folk and Americana singer-songwriter reflects over two decades of songwriting and performing\, during which he has shared the stage with artists such as Passenger\, Rodriguez\, Stu Larsen\, and Luke Sital Singh. As one half of the acclaimed duo “Joseph & Maia\,” he toured extensively throughout Europe\, Australia\, and New Zealand\, captivating audiences with his performances. Now Joseph is embarking on a new chapter as a solo artist. His debut album\, currently in the works\, is a deeply personal project that marks a significant milestone in his musical journey. DESCRIPTION:There is no set theme for this course; you are free to bring your own ideas—whether figurative or abstract—to life. Artist Christa Baumgärtel will give you the freedom to develop your own themes and bring them to life in clay.  \nSculpture offers a wide range of possibilities in terms of both content and form. \nFor example\, nature can serve as a source of inspiration (fruits\, seed pods\, etc.)\, as well as forms with an abstract\, contrasting character\, such as the interplay of geometric and organic shapes. \nWe welcome any creative ideas. \nIf you plan to create portraits of animals or people\, please bring clear photos\, such as profile and side views. \nWe will be working with clay and sculpting throughout the weekend\, which means we won’t be building hollow forms—this allows for changes to be made right up until the very end. The so-called “treasure regality” dates back to this period; it stipulates that all finds discovered deeper than a plowshare (approx. 30 cm) belong to the king (today\, the Federal Republic of Germany). Held in a relaxed atmosphere\, these meetings provide an opportunity for questions\, discussion\, and expert dialogue. DESCRIPTION:In the mid-1960s\, Bruno Fabeyer was considered one of Germany’s most wanted criminals. After committing numerous burglaries and killing a police officer\, he evaded capture for nearly a year by hiding in forests and marshes.  \nDr. Christof Haverkamp\, a journalist and historian from Lathen\, traces Fabeyer’s life story and contextualizes the case from both historical and criminal perspectives.
