SUMMARY:Writing Contest Hosted by the Emsland Archaeology Museum
DESCRIPTION:The Story of Red Franz \n\nJune 1900\, Neu Versen: Peat cutter Bernard Herbers struck an obstacle with his spade. He quickly realized that he had found the body of a young man. \n\n90 years later\, laboratory analyses confirmed that the bog body was that of a 25-year-old man from the 4th century A.D. Today we know that he was a Germanic warrior. He often traveled on horseback. He wore his blond hair artfully styled\, and with his towering stature\, he certainly made an impression. His death was no accident: a cut across his throat ended his life\, and his body was subsequently deposited in the bog. \nThat is how the story of the oldest known murder case in the Emsland region began. The death of the so-called “Red Franz” remains a mystery to this day. Many questions remain unanswered: Why did he have to die? Who murdered him? And how did he end up in the moor in the first place? \nEnter our writing contest and solve the mysteries surrounding the murder of Red Franz in a fictional crime story. Let your imagination run wild. The contest is open to all individuals between the ages of 12 and 18. Stories can be submitted via email to info@archaeologie-emsland.de with the subject line “The Murder of Red Franz.” Please note the maximum character limit of 8\,000 characters\, including spaces. \n  \nThe deadline for submissions is November 30\, 2026. The awards ceremony will take place on Tuesday\, January 12\, 2027\, at 5:00 p.m. at the Emsland Archaeology Museum. \n

SUMMARY:Cyanotype Workshop: Photography Without a Camera!
DESCRIPTION:Create unique photographs using the iron blue printing process! We’ll gather our images during a short outing in nature. Leaves\, sticks\, sand\, and other objects will serve as our subjects\, and we can capture them without a camera. Participants then place their image on the solar photo paper as they wish. Here\, everyone can get creative and make their own picture however they like. \n  \nAfter a short time in the sun\, the outlines of the objects placed on the paper become visible. The paper is developed using only tap water. It’s truly amazing to watch the positive image turn into a negative during development. An exciting experiment from the early days of photography! The coating on the watercolor paper is non-toxic\, making it suitable for children as well. \n  \nLed by: Denis and Anna Sandmann \nAge: 6 and up and adults \nStart: Saturday\, September 12\, 2026\, 2:00–5:00 p.m. \nFee: €22 + €8.00 for materials

SUMMARY:Treasure hunters among themselves
DESCRIPTION:Communication\, Sharing Experiences\, News: District Archaeologist Thomas \nOn the last Thursday of every month\, Kassens makes himself available to volunteer metal detectorists for an informal get-together. \nTreasure hunting was already a topic of interest in the early Middle Ages. The so-called “treasure regality” dates back to this period; it stipulates that all finds discovered deeper than a plowshare (approx. 30 cm) belong to the king (today\, the Federal Republic of Germany). Held in a relaxed atmosphere\, these meetings provide an opportunity for questions\, discussion\, and expert dialogue. Anyone else interested in archaeology is also welcome to learn more about archaeology and searching with metal detectors. \nLocation: Emsland Archaeology \nMuseum \nDates: July 30\, August 27\, \n\nSeptember\, October 29\,\nnovember\n\nTime: 5:30 p.m. \nAdmission: free

SUMMARY:Charlotte Wielage – Photons
DESCRIPTION:Photons are the smallest units of light and\, at the same time\, the starting point for these works\, in which visibility is understood as a dynamic process. Charlotte Wielage’s works reinterpret the classical glazing technique by using everyday materials such as adhesive tape and ink. Through layering\, transparent spaces of color emerge that are reminiscent of stained-glass windows and\, in interaction with light\, create luminous surfaces and a sense of spatial depth. The works navigate the space between illusion and reality\, making color an immediate\, spatial experience. \nWithin the space\, the works unfold their effect through a systematic interplay of layering\, repetition\, and variation. The structures set on glass react to light and their surroundings and extend into the space\, where they create colored shadows and overlays. Space thus does not appear as a fixed reality\, but rather as something that is continuously recreated by light. \nIn this interplay between system\, space\, and perception\, light becomes the connecting medium. It structures the arrangement\, activates the surface\, and alters visibility at the very moment of observation. Photons mark the point at which light\, space\, and perception interlock\, giving rise to visibility in the first place. \nSupported by the Emsland Regional Association \nHours: Tue.\, Thu.\, and Sat.\, 2:30–5:00 p.m.; Sun.\, 11:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. \nPlace: Koppelschleuse Art Center \nAdmission: free
