When he is looking for an apartment in Berlin, Jan Brandt learns that his great-grandfather’s house in his East Frisian home village of Ihrhove is about to be demolished. The owner, a building contractor, sees no reason to keep the old when something new could increase profits many times over. Jan Brandt is threatened with losing his home – and he takes up the fight to save the Gulfhof, the symbol of his origins. Born in East Frisia in 1974, Jan Brandt was shortlisted for the German Book Prize and was awarded the Nicolas Born Debut Prize. As part of the event, the author will read from the novel and talk about his village roots and experiences in East Frisia.
