The XIX Legion was already established at the time of the Roman Civil War in 41/40 BC by the later Emperor Augustus. It is one of those three legions that were destroyed in the famous “Varus Battle” at Kalkriese in the Teutoburg Forest in the year 9 AD. A group of enthusiastic hobbyists is reviving the “Cohors III” of this legion and trying to recreate soldier life in Augustan times as authentically as possible. During the summer months, the members of Legio XIX are on the road at many events on the theme of “Romans”, including the Roman Days in Kalkriese, in Bergkamen or in the Roman Park Xanten. Last year you were a guest at the Archaeology Museum for the first time on the occasion of the then special exhibition on Romans and Germanic tribes in Emsland. In 2023, the Legionnaires and their comrades-in-arms conclude the season with a camp and performance in Meppen. For the last time this year, you will be available to answer questions from interested visitors and guests, have great hands-on activities for children and live Roman life at the time of Emperor Augustus for a weekend.
