Built forms from colored clay – Dorothee Wenz
Dorothee Wenz from Schwabenheim will lead this year’s ceramics workshop at the Meppener Kunstkreis. After studying art education and fine arts at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz, she has been working as a freelance artist since 1995. Since then, she has exhibited her ceramics at home and abroad. She has also received several awards, including the Rhineland-Palatinate State Prize for Arts and Crafts in 2022.
What has been exposed to the weather and other influences over long periods of time, in layers of rock, shaped and pressed over the ages, has its own beauty and has fascinated them from the very beginning. She transforms this beauty into ceramic by coloring, layering, building, grinding and polishing. The topic of the workshop is
“Built shapes from colored clay”.
In this course, she shows how to create individually layered and patterned shapes and vessels from different colored clay masses.
The first step is to color the clay with ceramic color pigments. This is followed by structuring and layering the colored clays, whereby the possibilities are almost endless.
The works are constructed by hand from the individually colored clay blocks. Special scraping and grinding techniques are demonstrated to give the surface a delicate sheen after firing.
