Helga Baltabol was born in Riga in 1913, but had to flee from Lithuania to Upper Silesia in 1918 after the October Revolution, where she found a new home. She attended the State Academy of Arts and Crafts in Dresden and then worked as a freelance graphic designer. After the Second World War, she first moved to Hesse – between 1948 and 1955 she lived in Lingen. During this time, she created advertising graphics and illustrations and worked as an artist. However, she also created a series of impressive regional landscapes and depictions of animals; she was particularly interested in life in the town of Lingen, which she captured in ink and watercolor drawings of market activity, livestock trading and street scenes. Helga Baltabol died in Herdecke in 2006. The former director of the Emsland Museum in Lingen, Dr. Andreas Eiynck, will talk about the artist’s life and work and present selected works that are also represented in the exhibition.
